New “Office” Storage

September 14, 2010

Remember my former bedside table?

Well, it is now taking center stage as a new console in my kitchen/family room.

I needed storage.  Don’t we all need storage?  When we decided on this house we gave up one room that we had put pretty high on our list of priorities – a dedicated home office.  After looking at tons of homes, we had our search narrowed down to two.  One had a dedicated office at the front of the home with beautiful glass french doors.  The other had a small living room in the same spot.

After much debate, we decided that we really liked the overall location and layout of the house with the living room.  Alas, no dedicated home office.  But instead, a beautiful, bright and open space that will make entertaining our large families more comfortable.

Which brings me back to my need for more storage.  I knew when I saw this little guy at the Goodwill that there was potential.  So I broke out the spray paint and went to work.  Then there it sat all painted but with no pretty new hardware.  I looked and looked for just what I had in mind.  And then I found it.  Beautiful, simple, contempory pulls.  Only there was a problem.  The pulls were $15 each.  And I needed three.  And did I mention that I only paid $12 for this piece?  No matter how hard I was tempted, I couldn’t justify spending three times as much for the pulls – beautiful as they were.

So, out came another can of spray paint.  I’ll just try it, I thought.  What do I have to lose?  Well guess what?  I like these newly painted pulls.

Okay, if you look closely, you can tell they aren’t new and shiny.  But I like then anyway.  And I especially like the price.  Free.  This “new” console looks so much better than the pine gate leg table that was here before.  Which you will have to trust me on.  I could have sworn that I had a before picture, but alas, I couldn’t find it.  My pine table will find a new home in our basement.  This new piece is actually a little darker than it appears in the pictures.  It looks a little red in this picture.  It’s painted a dark espresso brown that matches nicely with the rest of the furniture in the room.

And I now have the storage I was so badly needing for all of our extra office/school supplies.  (Please ignore the “lovely” plastic runner under it.  Our dog has a fondness for nibbling at the edge of the carpet.  A bad habit we are in the process of breaking, but are trying to save our carpet in the meantime. :) )

And the best part of this little makeover?  I spent less than $20.  The console was $12.  I spent around $5 on spray paint.  I already had the primer and and metallic spray paint.  Here’s one more look at the before.

And the happy after.

A much more cohesive overall look and necessary storage as well.  And I am one step closer to getting this life of mine organized and in order, which is always a good thing.

Beautiful! I love it and have been searching for a storage solution like that – we also have a big, open living area and no dedicated office. I found a great vintage dresser last week that would have worked, but it was too wide for the space I have. So, I’m still on the hunt. Thanks for sharing what you did and I think the pulls look great!

I LOVE it! I thought for sure those were shiny new handles! They look great. And I have to say, I’m realllly loving the pops of turquoise you have going everywhere! We just got a new console table yesterday and I can’t wait to accessorize it! Thanks for the inspiration! :)

This turned out great! I’m just now finding out the wonders of spray paint. I have a new green challenge coming up starting on the 29th and this would fit right in. I was wondering if you would be willing to let me feature this project along with some other up-cycled projects?

Let me know

Great project! I just picked up my grandfather’s old desk which looks similar to your before shot (except a lot more chipped). Looks like I might be spray painting in the spring!
